Twiddle flooded music to our souls last night at their headlining show at Salt Lake City, UT’s The Commonwealth Room. In the midst of their ongoing Fall tour, the four-piece jam-folk band filled up the buzzling venue’s big room for a Thursday throwdown.

Taking the stage just before 9:30 p.m., the band kicked things off with their upbeat “Bronze Fingers,” keyboardist Ryan Dempsey starting off the night strong with a tight key melody breakdown. The band transitioned moods throughout the first set, playing renditions through “Dinner Fork” and “River Drift” before an extended “Ganja Medley” encompassed the room. The mashup, which is usually slightly different each time it’s performed live, saw sequencing covers of Bush’s “Glycerine,” Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry,” Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel,” Phish’s “Farmhouse” showcasing the group’s vast and unique cover catalog. A round out of “Gatsby The Great” and reggae vocalized “Moments” finished off the first set.

A long beer-lined set break made way for an energized second set just a quarter to 11 p.m. A jam-filled “Blueberry Tumble” sandwich smoothed easily over the crowd thanks to a “GooBerry Jelly” spread in the middle complete with a “Stand By Me” tease. Just as the band was ending the fast-pickin’ “Brown Chicken Brown Cow,” the room lit up with a cover of The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be,” lending the crowd to a synchronized chant heard across the Wasatch Mountains.

The night concluded with a psychedelic journey through “Mamunes The Faun” featuring a special sit-in by Mister F keyboardist Scott Hannay. A closing throwback of 2011’s “Doinkinbonk!!!” full of its frenzied key and time changes made way for a lighted disco party in the venue but quickly turned awry when the band busted out Primus’ “Too Many Puppies.”

The dark and grungy end to the show opened up just enough time for an emotive and more light-hearted encore, topping the night off with Mihali’s lyrical “Hattie’s Jam” that transitioned to the band’s favorited “When It Rains It Pours.”

Twiddle will continue their Fall tour tonight at Aspen, CO’s Belly Up Aspen and head down to Denver, CO for a headlining show at Mission Ballroom. Visit the band’s website for a full list of upcoming tour dates and tickets.
