Viromusic Turned COVID-19’s Genetic Code Into Song NFTs

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, you can now listen and own songs composed of COVID-19’s genetic sequence.

Viromusic is a music brand that is now utilizing the ever-changing music landscape and the latest blockchain technology to synthesize COVID-19 genetic codes into sound and playable songs. With the process of DNA Sonification, Viromusic uses software to filter through the virus’ ribonucleic acid (RNA) to sort out strands of the RNA that can be translated to music. An algorithm then coverts the strands into musical notes. Every note in the melody is part of the step-by-step instructions the virus uses to make more copies of itself.

Lastly, the software then transitions the music notes into a progression that musicians can play. Viromusic scouted musicians to play out the 10,000 genetically coded melodies on piano, cello, and ambient synths. The songs source a frequent theme of wandering, intertwined melodies, symbolic of the tangled web of code that lives inside all of us and all living organisms.

“We hope this project helps to raise awareness that even a virus capable of inflicting such misery is fundamentally based on the same code as every living thing on earth. We thought it would be interesting to take this code and make it play music. We hope you find it as haunting, interesting, and provocative as we do,” Viromusic stated on their website.

The 10,000 songs are now minted as a NFT (non-fungible token art) collection on the blockchain. Each one of the NFTs has a unique melody derived from the virus – no two songs are alike. You can own your own COVID-19 genetically coded song on Rarible here or listen to one of them below for free. Visit Viromusic’s YouTube to hear more of COVID-19’s unique coded songs.
