Meet the Artist: PFuzz

There’s something about violinist and electronic producer PFuzz that draws you in. Maybe it’s her spunky edge, her prominent style or her experimental layering of classical and electronic music – yet what strikes me as the most compelling is her story. Seemingly stacked with the odds against her, she’s navigated new avenues and broken through corridors and internal struggles to rise up as the artist she is today. Without further ado, meet the local artist taking the spotlight for the opening night of our newest concert series – Volume Lounge.

Stemming from deep roots in classical music, PFuzz originates as a violin player and teacher. With a clientele of students ranging from 8-60 years of age, she’s taught for the past fifteen years. The outlet came naturally to her at a young age. “I was great at playing by ear,” she tells me. “I grew up studying the Suzuki method, which relied heavily on ear training. Because of this, I work diligently with my students to train both their eyes and ears to make them more well-rounded musicians”.

It wasn’t until her move to Salt Lake City from the Bay Area when she truly challenged herself to explore a whole new world of music. Her familiar bearings as strictly a violinist transformed into a newfound appreciation for psychedelic bass music. She began her journey as an electronic producer shortly thereafter, standing in her own truth despite hurdles.

“There’s not a lot of people like me,” she says when speaking to Utah’s lack of diversity. “As a woman and a person of color, opportunity can be few and far between”. Yet throughout the expectations or pressure, PFuzz carries an authentic swagger that resounds into her work. She now blends her backgrounds of violin, electronic production and DJing to create a trifecta of sonic waves.

Come see the musical unfolding of PFuzz for yourself at our very first Volume Lounge: Live @ Varley on Thursday, March 14th!
